10 Important Ways To Protect Your Skin From The Sun
This post is all about ways to protect your skin from the sun this summer
It is finally that time of year we have all been waiting for. Summer! All year long we anticipate the warmer weather and the days we get to spend our time in the sun. Whether it’s just laying by the pool tanning or participating in summer activities, there is nothing like feeling the warmth of the sun on our skin.
Although the sun is so enjoyable to lay in especially because of our long winters, we must always remember that if we don’t take the proper precaution in the sun, it can actually be very dangerous for our skin. Over time, UV damage can take a toll on our skin. If we do not protected our skin from the sun, it can ultimately lead to premature wrinkles and permanent dark spots on our skin. Too much sun exposure can also raise our risk for skin cancer.
We Know Better
Luckily, in the year 2024 we are very well aware and educated on how important sunscreen and limiting our exposure to the sun is. Years ago, we were not completely aware of how damaging the sun was to us. As a result, we never wore sunscreen. In fact, we did the quite opposite. We would slather ourselves in baby oil in hopes of burning our skin! As ridiculous as that sounds, it is the absolute truth. In this day and age, we have no excuses not to protect our skin. We know a lot better, therefore wearing sunscreen and taking breaks from the sun is a necessity.
In this post, I will tell you 10 important ways to protect your skin from the sun this summer. I will also recommend some amazing products from Amazon. These products can help you keep your body and skin protected and hydrated. After all, we have one body and we must protect it at all costs. So let’s get into it!

Protect your skin from the sun
1. Wear a hat
Seems pretty simple, right? Wearing a hat on your head is something small you can do to help protect your skin, specifically your face from the sun. By wearing a hat in the sun, not only are you not exposing your face to the sun but you are also protecting your scalp. We don’t realize it but you can easily burn your scalp if you are spending a lot of time outside on a sunny day. I have personally burnt my scalp one time and let me tell you, it was painful! I learned my lesson after that and never forget to take a hat with me on sunny days.
This doesn’t just apply when you are laying by the pool or spending the day at the beach. You should be wearing a hat in your daily activities if you will be spending time outside. For example, if you are gardening outdoors, it’s super important not to forget your hat! Also, if you are spending the day at the zoo or an amusement park. These are all places where you are walking around for hours not realizing that the sun is damaging your face and scalp.
The absolute best hats that I love are the ones that conveniently fit in my purse or beach bag. The ones I have linked down below come in different colours and easily roll up making it easy to travel with. They are a definite must-have during the summer months or when on vacation.
2. Keep Hydrated
When we are having fun on the beach or swimming all day, we may sometimes forget something very important. Keeping hydrated during the summer whatever the outdoor activity is, is essential.
Have you ever spent the day in the sun and at the end of the day you feel super drained? One of the reason you are feeling like this is because you are not drinking enough water. Keeping hydrated throughout the day will not only make you feel better but it will also prevent your skin from feeling so dry. Remember, beauty is from the inside out.
There are a couple of things you can do to help you remember to stay hydrated. The first one is bringing a tumbler with you and filling it up before you leave the house. I specifically love the Stanley Cup because it is very large and it keeps your liquids super cold all day even in the sun. Another way you can stay hydrated is by adding electrolytes to your water. This way you are not so bloated by drinking a ton of water all day. Electrolytes keeps you even more hydrated than water alone and these packets taste so good!
3. Wear Sunscreen
Wearing sunscreen is probably the most important thing you can do to protect your skin from damaging your skin. Not only is it important to wear sunscreen but it is equally important to keep re-applying throughout the day. A lot of the times, we get so carried away with our day that we completely forget to re-apply and then wonder how we got sunburnt. It is not enough to just apply one time, especially if you are going to be swimming or sweating from summer activities.
Luckily for us, there are so many great products out there that make it super easy for us to apply and re-apply sunscreen. A sunscreen that you can spray on is such a convenient way to apply and the 50 protection from the brand SunBum is a great one to choose. It also smells really good!
4. Sunscreen On Your Face
I personally suggest purchasing a different sunscreen for your face as it is usually more sensitive than your body. The ones I have linked below are my favourite sunscreens for the face that I use for different moments.
Wearing sunscreen on your face shouldn’t be only for the moments you are exposed to direct sunlight. In fact, you should be incorporating spf to your daily skin care routine. I personally wear Anthelios Mineral 50 protection by the Brand La Roche Posay every day, even if I don’t leave the house. It is tinted and for me has replaced my daily foundation. It is a proven fact that people who wear spf on their face on a daily basis have better and younger looking skin later on in life.
Another great sunscreen is Botanical 50 spf from the brand Australian Gold. This is also a tinted sunscreen but I like to use this one when going to the beach or the pool and want a little bit of coverage. This product is a little heavier than the one from La Roche Posay so I don’t like wearing it daily.
The other 2 I have linked are regular sunscreen for the face. The one from SunBum is super easy to apply as it is a stick sunscreen. The one from Hawaiian Tropics is a great sunscreen to wear alone or under your makeup. It gives you a really pretty natural glow.
5. Sit In The Shade
When spending the day outdoors especially if it’s at the pool or the beach, sitting in the sun is part of the vacation/summer experience. And although that’s great, as long as you’re wearing sunscreen and protecting your face against the sun, you cannot forget to give your body a break once in a while, and sit in the shade. Giving your skin a break from the sun is absolutely necessary especially if you will be spending the whole day outdoors.
Whether it’s sitting under a tree or under an umbrella, every so often you need to take that break. You may be saying well, that’s boring! You want to enjoy the day. But there are other ways that you can enjoy your day by sitting in the shade. For example, reading a book or listening to music. Reading by the pool or at the beach just hits different.
Down below, I have linked some book recommendations, and a chair that is connected to your own personal umbrella. This is a great item if you’re going on vacation and want to spend a few days by the beach, it’s a great way to sit in the shade and relax. I have also linked a portable, chargeable Bluetooth speaker that would be great to take to the pool or to the beach with you.
6. Protect your Lips
Wearing spf on your lips is just as important as wearing it on your body. Our lips are one of the most sensitive parts of our bodies, and when they are exposed to the sun for long periods of time, this can affect them. Not only can the sun dry out your lips very badly and cause them to hurt you, but you are also putting yourself at risk of getting sun blisters. And let me tell you from experience, they are not pleasant! Not only is it important to wear lip balm with SPF, but it is also just as important to keep reapplying all day.
I have linked two of my favourite lip balms with spf down below. There are tons of lip products that include spf. Just make sure to look at the label and it will say it right in the front.
7. Protect Your Eyes
Protecting your eyes from the sun is just as important as protecting your face, your lips and your skin. Not only are you protecting your eyes, but you’re protecting the skin around your eyes. The skin around our eyes is probably the thinnest skin on our face and when you get sunburnt around your eyes, it can be extremely painful. Wearing sunglasses can also prevent premature wrinkles. For example, when you are outside and the sun is bothering your eyes, you’re constantly squinting. And if you spend a lot of time outdoors, the constant squinting can affect your eyes in the long run. The last thing we need are premature wrinkles, so protect your eyes and the skin around it!
Down below, I have linked sunglasses that will protect your eyes and are super trendy at the same time.
8. Avoid Sun Peak
This is something we usually don’t think about. Depending on what time of the year it is, Sun Peak is at different times of the day. Always make sure to check your weather app and it will tell you when the sun is at its peak. This means that the sun is the strongest around this time of day. When you figure out what time Sun Peak is at, this is when you should choose to sit in the shade. Sun Peak is when the sun is the most dangerous and can burn your skin really easily even sometimes while wearing sunscreen.
9. Cover Up
Purchasing a cover-up should be a necessity when spending hours and hours in the sun. If you are going to be walking on the beach or stopping to go eat somewhere outdoors, wearing a cover-up is a great way to protect your skin from the sun. This is a really great way to give your skin a break from the sun when you’ve been spending a lot of time outside. It’s also a really cute way to express your style and match it with a cute pair of sandals and a hat.
10. After Sun Care
Once we have gone home after spending the day in the sun, this is when we realize if we have gotten too much sun exposure. If you’ve gotten burnt by the sun, owning a good cool down moisturizer will definitely help heal your skin. It will also make you feel much more comfortable because if you’ve ever gotten a sunburnt before you know that it is quite uncomfortable. The cool down cream from the brand SunBum is a great product to have in your cabinet just in case you ever find yourself in this situation.
If you have not burnt your skin after a day in the sun but have just gotten a suntan, your skin still needs to be moisturized. The sun rips all the moisture out of our skin. So we always need to replenish it after spending a day in the sun. Any type of moisturizer will do. This one from EOS is my favourite because it’s super moisturizing and it smells incredible.
Conclusion
In conclusion, spending time in the sun can be so much fun but at the same time it could be very dangerous. So we cannot forget all the ways to help protect our skin from the sun. Everything I have mentioned up above are things that you can use in your everyday life in the summertime or when you are on vacation to help keep your skin safe. Getting a beautiful suntan during the summer months makes us look so healthy and bronze but let’s just make sure we’re doing it the right way.
Are you planning to spend a lot of time in the sun this summer? Are you planning any vacation time? Let me know in the comments I’d love to know.
